Directed, edited, and produced by Paula Damasceno, a Greensboro-based, multifaceted artist originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, “The Collector” is a video made in Greensboro that weaves a modern and haunted electronic sound with a throwback to MTV visual styles from the ’90s.
Quilla’s soothing, passionate vocals in “The Collector” flow seamlessly with her mellow electronic backdrop, proving not only her effortless ability to consistently create powerful melodies, but the drive and complexities of being more than a musician and vocalist, but a dexterous production artist.
The archival footage seen in the video is quite fascinating, used with permission from the H. Lee Waters Collection, housed at Duke University. The footage is from silent films documenting communities in the Piedmont region of North Carolina from 1936 to 1942.
